About the 2015 BMW M4

The M car, with a BMW straight-six, got the “Twin Power” designation to the M-developed engine and is fitted with Mitsubishi-sourced turbochargers. It also got its own chassis code for the first time. It’s called the F82.

The M4’s 3.0-liter unit can rev up to 7600 rpm, and the twin-turbo six-cylinder is rated at 425 horsepower from 5500 to 7300 rpm, while torque tops out at 406 lb-ft from 1800 rpm. That’s an increase of 11 horses and 111 lb-ft of twist versus the V-8–powered M3.

The M4’s standard transmission is a six-speed manual, which automatically revs on downshifts. The optional transmission is a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic, which delivers quicker shifts in exchange for additional weight. BMW says that the M4 is approximately 25% more efficient than the model it replaced.

The M4 weighs in at only about 3400 pounds. How? The two less cylinders help in the quest for lighter weight and better efficiency, but additional modifications played a role too. BMW cut weight from the E92-generation M car by making additional structural changes, added lightweight seats, and used aluminum for the front and rear suspension links, the hood and fenders. Carbon fiber is used for the roof, driveshaft, and trunk lid. And to save even more weight, BMW incorporated electric power steering.

With a wider track than the base 4-series, the coupe’s massive front-end intakes, and the traditional power-dome, the M4 looks and performs as aggressive as it was intended. The BMW M4 seems to have turned out to be everything it was meant to be.
